I have always mentioned how nice Switzerland is to travel on their trains. Because the country is mountainous and somewhat small, their trains really takes you nearly everywhere, connecting most of their towns, big or small. Most importantly, the wonderful ski resorts of Switzerland like Zermatt, St. Moritz, Davos, Arosa, Gstaad and Andermatt have their own train stations making them easily accessible via trains from the cities of Zurich, Lucerne and Geneva.
In fact I have written about how Swiss Railway company SBB offers a discounted Ski Pass and Rail Ticket to several ski areas in the country. Recently I discovered that SBB is offering free luggage pick up and delivery to selected hotels or holiday home at towns across Switzerland. From Andermatt to Zermatt, there are plenty of ski resorts included with this offer.
How it works is that travellers need to travel the same journey from where your luggage is to be picked up to where it would be dropped off. Travellers need to have a valid ticket or a Swiss Travel Pass when the luggage is to be picked up and they need to book or reserve pick-up service by 8pm at least 2 days before collection. Since it is Switzerland we are talking about, the luggage considered includes skis, ski boots, poles, snowboards, sledges. Do note that bikes are not permitted in this delivery.
It would take 2 days for the luggage to be delivered so for skiers travelling to say St. Moritz could book for ski luggage collection on they day they arrive (with the caveat that they reserve this service 2 days prior to their arrival date) in Zurich or Geneva and stay 2 days in the city with their hand carry luggage before heading to St. Moritz where their skis would then be delivered.
Normally the cost of 1-4 luggages can be around CHF44, but this service is free when booked between 4 September and 31 December 2019 up to one year prior to departure. This means that you can book this service for delivery up till 31 Dec 2020, as booking period is between now till 31 December 2019.
Do note though that each luggage can only weigh a maximum of 25kg and has to be properly packed. Skis and snowboards should be packed in their bags and ski boots are expected to be placed in a separate boot bag. Also note that public holidays and Sundays are not possible for delivery and collection dates and if they are in between your collection and delivery dates, one extra day is added to the delivery time. So if luggage collection or pick up occurs on a Friday, it would only be delivered on a Monday.
While this service is free and an address is to be added for the pick up location, I believe a hotel address in your arrival city would work as well. And when utilizing this service, I expect travellers to co-ordinate with the bell desk in the hotel to receive their luggage or hold them in storage until you arrive. Having the same name in your reservation with the luggage service would also be a must. Other than that, I think this is a great offer for skiers and snowboarders, and it once again shows the Swiss hospitality to travellers. For sure, it makes it easier and more enticing to travel to Switzerland on a ski holiday!
