Since I just returned from Europe, I went about looking for ticket prices from Asia to Europe for the summer time. And I glanced upon these good Business Class fares onboard Vietnam Airlines for return flights between Singapore and Paris. What was interesting about the fare was that the segment from Vietnam (departing Hanoi) to Paris would be operated on the new Airbus A350. As a former French colony, it made sense for Vietnam Airlines to fly its flagship A350 to Paris. What a coincidence as I just happen to write about 2016 being the year when the A350 starts to become more prominent in air travel.
Business class onboard these flights are in a staggered 1-2-1 configuration. As seen from the photo is seems the even numbered seats are closer to the windows, while the odd numbered seats would be closer the aisle. Couples travelling together should try to get the centre seats. While these are not my favourite kind of business class seats, they are lie-flat and should provide a comfortable ride from Asia to Europe.
The flight from Singapore departs at slightly past 1pm in the afternoon, arriving in Hanoi around half past 3pm. The shorter flight is operated by the Airbus A321 which should feature recliner Business class seats. The connecting flight to Paris departs Hanoi at slighlty after midnight, arriving in Paris at 7am in the morning, giving passengers a full day in the city. A long connecting time of 8 hours is perhaps the main drawback here, though it will give adventurous passengers time for a short journey into the city and get back to the airport later in the night for the connecting flight. Alternatively, passengers could pay a bit more (~S$250) for a later flight out of Singapore which still gives a 5 hour transit time.
Return flights have a much shorter transit time departing Paris at 2pm, arriving Hanoi the next day at 6:20am in the morning, with a connecting flight back to Singapore at 7:45am, arriving in Singapore in time for lunch at slightly before noon time. This leaves a transit time of 1 hour and 25 minutes.
For the price S$2,367 net inclusive of taxes, this is a pretty good deal. These tickets could be purchased directly from Vietnam Airlines or some online travel agencies. This is an even better deal when you consider that Singapore Airlines charges tickets for the same dates and routes at around the same price in Economy Class. Economy versus Business? An easy choice for travellers any time especially since this Business Class tickets would also earn miles.
The routing according to the Great Circle Mapper would earn 14,141 base miles for the round trip and with the Air France Flying Blue mileage program, it should net 17,676 (1.25x) miles as passengers are travelling in Business Class. Fare basis code for this fare is D1YASW for those who are keen to book this ticket.
