Sometimes last minute hotel bookings can bring great deals or sometimes not. But I decided to book a night at the Sheraton Cerritos which is located halfway between the beaches and the coast and the Eastern part of greater Los Angeles where I would be commuting to in the day. As such, I figured it makes sense to book a hotel somewhere in the middle and I think I made a great choice since I was able to get a nice ‘SPG Plus’ rate of $139++ which includes breakfast for one person. The price was a few dollars more than the best available prepaid rate and that makes for a good value in my opinion.
Location wise, it might not be to everyone’s liking since it is located in a suburban business park, though the hotel has free parking lots outside and around the property. I was able to get a parking lot just a few steps from the entrance at night when I returned to the hotel. Though it was a weekend when I stayed so the neighbouring areas and streets were very quiet.
Entering the hotel is kind of unique since the reception desk is somewhat in another section. There is a cafe serving Starbucks coffee and light meals of sandwiches and other snacks before the main lobby proper. The central compact lobby has several seating area with the elevators to the guest rooms located conveniently in the middle.
Beyond the central reception lobby, there is another section where the Link@Sheraton work stations are located at along with a lobby bar. This section also leads to the event halls and meeting rooms which seems to be quite popular for weddings as one was held inside the hotel on the weekend I stayed here.
Since I was just dropping off my bags for stay, I proceeded to check-in. The process was very fast with a front desk agent serving me immediately. I was able to get my key and proceed to the guest room in no time at all, and this is always something that pleases me. The front desk agent was also concise in explaining my SPG Gold benefits and providing me details about the breakfast. I also made it a point to choose the bonus points since I did not expect to have drinks at the hotel nor require the other options for Gold members.
Room No: 829 Category: Standard King Room
Like all standard hotel rooms, the bathroom on the right was the first thing guests will notice. Nothing fancy about the bathroom with a standard layout and a shower/bathtub combination. Bath amenities were the usual Sheraton-brand and there is a complete set of amenities provided. Consistency is sometimes a good thing when it comes to hotels, as guests know what to expect!
Inside the bedroom, the space was very good with a King sized bed in the centre and a couple of chairs by the huge window that has a view of the suburban office park. There is also a work desk with an armchair and a nice large flatscreen TV on a 3 tier cabinet.
Aside from the comfortable bedroom, the hotel also has a spacious fitness centre with adequate equipments. This would be a good sized gym for those guests that needs to keep in shape!
Since I had breakfast included in the rate, I was able to enjoy it in the morning at the Grille 91 restaurant located in the lobby level. The restaurant also contains a bar and an outdoor patio.
Below are some of the food available for breakfast and I have to say it is a nice selection, and slightly better than what would usually be served on a Club Lounge.
Aside from the cold cuts and continental breakfast choices, there was a variety of hot dishes on the buffet counter at the end of the restaurant. These dishes even includes an unusual selection of Chilaquiles.
The only disappointment in the breakfast was perhaps the lack of an espresso machine and there was no specialty coffee served so I had to settle for just a plain cup of brewed coffee and orange juice. I would have expected a paid breakfast to include at least choices of cappuccino, latte and a mocha.
On check-out, the process was as efficient as possible but I realized that I did not obtain any Starpoints for the stay at all. Considering I booked the room from the official SPG.com and everything looks to be in order, I made it a point to contact customer service for the missing points. It was a bit of a hassle to be sure but I did eventually get the correct points posted. Thus I would encourage SPG guests to check their folio and points activity carefully the next time you check-out using a special promotional rate as some hotels might just negate the points in lieu of the promotion.
For a standard Sheraton, this was one of the better ones I stayed in North America. The room was clean and spacious. The rate was moderate and the addition of breakfast makes it a better value, especially for SPG members who are not Platinum yet. While location was not the most glamorous, the convenience of free parking around the hotel makes it a good value overall for Los Angeles.
