South America is one of the continent I have yet to visit and I noticed that some flights are quite a good deal for January departures. By that time, Canada will be deep in winter mode while South America is summer time. Thus it could potentially be a time to escape the cold for those not accustomed to it.
Flights on United Airlines starting from January are about $1500 (~C$1970) in Business Class for east coast Canadian cities. The flights can be on a combination of Air Canada/United from Toronto (YYZ) or Montreal (YUL) to Houston (IAH) and then on United’s new 787-9 Dreamliner for the onward flight to Santiago (SCL). Fares on the sames dates that I checked are $1300 for Economy so I think the Business Class for this journey would be quite worth the extra $200 since one gets a lie-flat seat and the extra miles.
According to the Great Circle Mapper, this journey should earn between 11,800-12,400 miles and with a 50% Business Class fare (P) bonus on United’s Mileage Plan, that is about 17,700-18,600 miles, depending on which city one originates from (YUL gets slightly more miles in this case).
For the West-coasters originating from Vancouver (YVR) and Calgary (YYC), there are also some good fares on Delta and United at between $2,200-2,500 depending on the dates. For flights on Delta, they usually route via Seattle (SEA), Minneapolis (MSP) or Salt Lake City (SLC) and Atlanta (ATL) so 2 stopovers might be required on most flights, which could be more inconvenient for some.
Do note that some of these fares are also available for the winter holidays so one could certainly use them for a holiday. Happy searching and hopefully someone gets to fly to South America on these fares!
