The airport limousine which was in the form of a Toyota Camry dropped me off at the front porch of the hotel and I was helped immediately with my bags. I did arrive quite early in the morning before noon time and when I tried to check-in at the lobby, they actually directed me to the Le Royal Club lounge on the 26th floor. The lobby of the hotel was vast and grand, and has a very beautiful Christmas tree in the centre. So it gave great first impressions!
One of the staff member used his key card to allow me to head to the club lounge floor since the hotel uses an encryption for guests to be able to access only the floor(s) their key card allows. The club lounge was dark yet cosy unlike the lobby which was vast and bright. There was sit-down check-in counters and one of the best check-in hosts I have encountered helped to check me in. Upon being seated, another lounge host came over to pass me cold towel and asks me for drink orders. I had one iced tea to start while the other host checked me in. Being the time between breakfast and lunch, the lounge was fairly quiet and there was probably one or 2 guests in the lounge.
Room No: 2803 Category: Le Royal Club King Room
Initially I was assigned a club king room on the 28th floor and it was a nice and spacious room. However on checking the SPG app, I did notice some suites available and enquired if I could have those instead. The host on the club lounge was gracious and offered to show me the suite. But with the suite located on a lower floor and at the corner with less of a view, I preferred the room I was given since I was travelling alone anyway.
The room has a 2-seater sofa at the end by the windows and also features a large work desk with a table ornament. There was a King bed and a small TV cabinet. If anything, the whole room seems a bit sparse but it felt bright and airy and offers a nice view of the surrounding skyscrapers and the greenery around Wireless Road.
My room on the 28th floor was also located beside one enormous suite (probably the Presidential suite) as I noticed a view of the suite in the morning during my stay.
The bathroom is equally spacious and reminds me of the bathroom layout in the JW Marriott Surabaya and the Sheraton on the Park at Sydney. There was a central vanity counter with a bathtub on the left side and the toilet and shower stall on the right side.
Even though I was in a club room, the amenities provided were the generic-branded Le Méridien ones, and I just used the ones I brought along with me.
The impressive part of this hotel though was the generosity since after being settled into the room, a staff member came by and provided fruit platter and a candy-shaped package filled with local snacks, and a bar of chocolates underneath. At night, the hotel also provides madeleines and chocolates during turndown service.
For SPG Platinum members, one of the benefits included complimentary laundry for 2 pieces per night and since I was staying for 2 nights I made full use of the laundry services. When I dropped it before noon time, I was able to get my clothes back in the evening as I returned to my room. I was not sure what time it was delivered at though.
As I was meeting friends for both nights for dinner and that there was just so many Thai delicacies I wanted to eat that I did not really have the complimentary evening cocktails and snacks served in the lounge. However on one of the afternoon while waiting for my friend to pick me up, I had a cup of latter, some tapas dishes and a variety of sweet macaroons. The spread during the evening cocktail was very good and amongst one of the better ones I have seen in a club lounge. The service by the staff in the club lounge was also excellent as they are always on the lookout to see if you ever need anything. There was just the way they serve you without interrupting that makes it great service! As I needed to get a phone charger as well, the club lounge host was able to direct me to the Apple reseller located at an office building mall beside the hotel.
For breakfast I had it at the lobby level restaurant on both days I was staying here and the spread was equally good. And SPG Platinum members even get to have breakfast in the lobby restaurant which was a great choice I think. There was a fresh made-to-order noodle counter, the usual eggs station, a continental selection central buffet counter and also a dessert and fruits section.
Being a Le Méridien hotel, there was also the special dishes in collaboration with chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten such as the breakfast shots and the egg souffle which is scrambled egg places under the espresso steam to create a fluffy egg dish. The most enjoyable part of the breakfast for me though was the guava with salt and chilli, a simple Thai snack that can be obtained along the street too!
The cost for my 2 nights stay in the Plaza Athénée came down to around US$240, which I thought was excellent value since I still get my bonus SPG points and had a very good club lounge access for both nights. The hotel is located along a side street so that makes it slightly less noisy but yet still close by to the BTS Phloen Chit Station. Beside the hotel is the Ecoplex Ventures office building which has a small mall at the ground floor that houses an Apple reseller, a bank, some restaurants as well as a 7-Eleven convenience store. Thus I found the location to be pretty good since it is between the Erawan area and the Sukhumvit area where the malls and food areas are located at respectively. With that this would definitely be one of the hotels I would return when the rates are right.
