The past 12 months have been a lacklustre period where most of the movies I have seen have yet to make an impression, and after watching Skyfall, I just felt cheated by going to the movies. I absolutely loathe the last James Bond movie and most probably will not return to watch the series in the theatres. Late last year, I have been wanting to watch the latest Hong Kong blockbuster titled Cold War in English, or 寒戰 (pronounced: han zhan) but I missed its screening. I did manage to get the blu-ray copy of the show and watched it yesterday.
The movie revolves around the theme of a competition for power between 2 deputy commissioners of police in the Hong Kong Police Force. It is a bit like a mix of psychological thriller and political drama, and the scenes definitely has taken some cues from the Hong Kong hit ‘Infernal Affairs’.
As a psychological thriller, the music score kept up the momentum and acted as the pulse of the show. While the start of the show can be a bit confusing, the aerial cinematography of Hong Kong was stunning and definitely showcases a different view of the city. The director leaves viewers guessing as to who is the main antagonist of the plot until the end of the movie and was able to shift suspicion from one person to another with ease.
As a political drama, Tony Leung Ka-Fai and Aaron Kwok both acted the parts, and more credits perhaps goes to Tony Leung for the several difficult scenes he was able to potray vividly, and thus making a greater impression on the viewer! The dialogue was also worth a mention as adds a whole dimension to the movie and provides critical feedback to the viewers which would otherwise be much more difficult to potray on the screen.
While the action scenes might be a bit exaggerated and seems to be more of an afterthought, the whole movie was very well planned with drama that keeps viewers entertained. And it is worth a mention on the same breath as the Infernal Affairs trilogy. That is because Cold War part 2 is already in the works, and that will be the show I am looking forward to!
